Currently learning how to make slide show videos with music to post on my Instagram. Using Adobe Lighroom CC and finally getting the hang of it! Now to figure out why it is when posted to Instagram the image quality of my videos are more blurry. But when uploading the  images from my iphone 6plus into Lightroom CC to create video slideshows, the images are crisp and clear. Oh well, yet more research.

To view the videos, click on them. In addition, you can watch them and view various images over on my Instagram. To go there - click on video link at upper left corner that reads bellandfinch. Cheers, June.

Inside one area of my studio during the summer. More of the studio can be seen on my Instagram. Meanwhile regarding our shop - all sorts of changes happening. Many new projects, furniture, home decor items in the works! In addition, I'm taking several courses on screen and block printing, surface pattern design, upholstery, including the business side of running and marketing a small business.

Although lots happening -  through it all, feeling more positive that this shop has a good chance to succeed. Finally, items are starting to sell! Future is beginning to look a wee bit brighter!

Until next time. . .

Cheers,
June

Here are more photos showing hand painted and fully restored Chinoiserie desk. Restoring it, was a very time-consuming endeavor. But in the final hour, well-worth-it! So surprising how quickly it sold on my Chairish shop - less than three hours! The sale happened in July.

Description: Inlaid drop down panel features charming painted vignettes of exotic birds, vase of flowers, weeping willow, fence/bridge, and pagoda. These panel scenes originally made (possibly 1920s era) with green background were painted in gold then given delicate black lines. Fast forward to this year, the wood surface was painted in several layers of blue/green/and black using custom made chalk paint recipe. To add further interest, I hand-painted intricate motifs in black and golden brown throughout to coincide with the raised panels. Here and there, the painted surfaces were distressed lending worn vintage appeal.

The drop front lid opens easily (original key) to reveal shelved storage cubbies painted in tints of blue-green chalk paint. Surrounding the painted interior drop top is a border motif in subtle black and golden brown colors. Interior complimentary to exterior colors. In addition, the intricately carved drawer (dovetailed corners/wooden hand painted knobs), contains a handmade (removable) drawer liner created by me.

In sum, adding the unique hand-painted motifs helped to make this piece even more special. To me, it recalls oriental/European folk art from centuries past.

Note: During restoration there was a rocking issue wherein desk was structurally unsound. However, all thanks to my husband Don’s carpentry skills, this was resolved by incorporating a complimentary carved centerpiece and four bars attached to the back undercarriage.

The overall surface of this desk was professionally sprayed with (dead flat) water based polyurethane clear varnish. The results truly ensure an attractive velvety patina including lasting durability.

So that's how this unique secretary desk came to be. Although both myself and Don are missing it, we hope the purchaser is enjoying.

More vintage furniture painted in the Chinoiserie styles including other eastern influences coming in the near future.

See you next time!
Cheers,
June

It may be the last day of September, but beyond the hill awaits further adventures.

Are you looking forward to October? For sure, I am. Love that cozy feeling as days begin to turn cooler. The scents and sounds of crackling bonfires. Plump pumpkins amid towering corn stalks. And then there's "All Hallow's Eve"!

Okay, getting in the mood. Time to reread Ray Bradbury and classic horror stories and watch spooky movies. Three movies in particular come to mind. For instance, 1961 'The Innocents' based on Henry James Turn of the Screw with Deborah Kerr; and 'The Haunting' with Julie Harris; also 1977 'Full Circle' aka 'The Haunting of Julia' with Mia Farrow. Goosebumps anyone?

Be good people!

Cheers,
June

UPDATE: Within a few hours after listing this desk in our shop at Chairish - the desk has SOLD! Once a seller's item has sold, Chairish deletes listing. And since you'll no longer be able to see this lovely item on Chairish, you can view a VIDEO showcasing makeover progression over on my Instagram gallery feed by clicking June's Instagram link located on the sidebar.

As of today, another gorgeous piece of furniture now available at Bell & Finch Studio Shop! Discovered through an antique dealer, it was originally in very bad shape with damaged veneer on the top surface, wobbly structure, thick varnish layers, etc. After restoring and applying carved backside centerpiece and vertical slats for added structural support, surfaces received several layers of colors and distressing using my own custom chalk paint recipe. Afterward, I decided to add freehand painted motifs to add more interest to the piece. The inside was handpainted with motif border including a removable custom drawer liner. If I'd had more room in my house, it would have stayed!

Cheers,
June
Heads up! The Chinoiserie folding floor screen on my Chairish shop has officially sold. Now gone from my possession and residing in another home, my initial thoughts seeing it loaded onto the transit truck, was filled with sadness. But time heals. It's comforting realizing that the buyer thought enough of it to actually purchase. And this certainly helps keep me inspired to continue on my creative journey. In sum, all is good. The studio shop awaits my return.

Thanks for all the lovely personal email compliments and questions received over the weeks it was available in my shop. And a big thank you to (Jaime) on purchase. In addition, Chairish! Btw, Chairish website now has the ability for visitors to leave comments regarding seller's items. So, comment away!

Cheers,
June

Note: More Chinoiserie style creations coming in the form of hand-painted textile tapestries. In addition, working on surface pattern designs for potential pillows, and lampshades. Stay tuned.

This morning. Freshly cut cosmos from the flower garden. When it comes to my first-time adventures in growing flowers for cutting, the cosmos dominant. Meaning, entering the garden nearly every day, their appearances seem to have tripled.

Then again, there are the flourishing sweet peas and Italian white sunflowers currently reaching between 6-7 foot heights. But back to the cosmos. Except for some windy weather mishaps (bent stems) and plentiful deadheading, thus far they've been the easiest plant to grow in the garden. Most importantly, free of bad bugs and disease!

While in the garden amid the cosmos, it's thrilling to watch their blossom heads sway gracefully in the breezes. Do you grow cosmos? Would like to hear about your experiences.

Note: bouquet includes lace cap hydrangea. Also, more photographs of cosmos and other flowers growing in the garden coming later.

Cheers,
~ June
UPDATE: SOLD - March 2017! An elegant vintage dresser (possibly 1920's era) refinished to bring out it's true character. This dresser was purchased from a vintage furniture dealer. Prior condition was in dire need of labor-intensive paint stripping and sanding. Afterward, I brush painted (Annie Sloan Chalk Paint) to surfaces, then my husband professionally sprayed matte varnish for protection. Normally I use my own specialty chalk paint recipes but decided this piece would be a good candidate for the popular Annie Sloan brand. The color was Old White.

In a later post, I'll share before & after pictures of this lovely dresser. It was one major task for it to end up looking so lovely. Over the moon with this piece not only by appearance but also the silky smooth surface.

Cheers,
June
Here is the sweet pea bouquet previously seen in a post with cosmos. Today, I'd like to take you on a little house tour with our little bouquet friend. So here we go from room to room. . .

First Day ~ Downstairs

It begins one early morning. Once snipped from the flower garden then arranged in a small ironstone creamer, our house guest settled upon the kitchen counter top. An apple had joined. One can never say no to an apple.

By noon, the house guest required a cooler place to settle as temps reached 90 degrees outside. And so, off to the powder room it went and rested on the pedestal sink. For several hours, it would remain while competing with the bold wallpaper.

After dinner, the guest was brought into the living room to rest on the fireplace mantle. While we binge watched Dicte on Netflix, there were occasional glances toward our lovely but silent guest.

Second Day ~ Upstairs

During morning hours, the guest had found its way upstairs to the studio. Paris, I love you!

Late afternoon, the guest kept welcoming company in the office.

It was the midnight hour when the guest finally found refuge on the bedroom side table. It's fragrance brought forth cozy vibes of much-needed blissful sleep.

Fast forward a few days later. . . farewell to the faded petals our house guest left behind.

Cheers,
~ June

P.S. Aforementioned show Dicte, is a Danish crime drama television series. In addition, other foreign crime drama series (have a long list but here are two more) we've binge watched and you may be interested in watching too - 'The Bridge' and 'Spiral'. Great stuff! View them on Netflix or Hulu. All are English subtitled.

Here They Are! Sweet peas growing in my cut-flower garden. As a sweet pea growing newbie, the experience of growing them from seedlings is bringing tremendous gratification. The once-upon-a-time baby plants have grown up. And thus far, surviving!

I forgot to mention in last post. . . the annual sweet pea seedlings I used were Burpee 'Galaxy Mix'. There is another sweet pea patch growing near my garden shed. But for reasons unknown, although could be soil issues, they aren't performing as well as the ones here.

Last week, aphid infestation began to appear. I've resorted to spraying them in the early evenings using a mixture of Castile soap, a dash of vegetable oil, and water. The following morning, I spray off the mixture due to the potential risk of soap scorching the plants. We're having extremely hot weather conditions. Hope this works. I'd liked to see these plants last until September!

Drawbacks to my trellis setup:
The bamboo canes and twine trellis placed centrally in bed, has become enormously cumbersome. Two Reasons: firstly, the surrounding cosmos flowers growing profusely (staked with twine). Since sowed, they're making it difficult to snip sweet pea flowers, weed, water, and spray aphids. Secondly, sweet peas were growing taller and needed more poles for added height. So, two weeks ago I found some willow twigs from a willow tree growing nearby. These were tied with wire to existing cane poles (see photos 1, 3, 9). A major task stepping carefully around cosmos to avoid breaking their stems. The experience reminescent of phrase - to paint oneself into a corner. In sum, won't do this setup ever again!

Plans for growing sweet peas next time:
1) purchase hardier seed varieties. Also try growing perennial sweet pea to use as a hedge plant
2) sow seeds earlier than previously in March
3) sow seeds using root trainers (cell packs) as suggested by Sarah Raven
3) plant in rows and provide trellis netting
4) purchase beneficial insect larvae/adults to rid the bad insects.
